課程概述

由每一位修課學生需針對特定主題選取一篇原著生物統計方法或理論型論文進行口頭報告並回答問題，其他同學則需評論與提問。

Each student in the course has to choose an original methodology or application paper of biostatistics for oral presentation and respond to comments and questions from the audience. Students who are not presenting are required to comment and ask questions on the presentation.

 

課程目標
 本課程藉由生物統計理論與方法相關文獻之閱讀報告與討論，學習如何發掘及定義生物統計之研究議題，進而培養獨立解決問題的能力；本課程並磨練生物統計人員必備之表達及溝通以及學術專業寫作能力。

This course requires reading and discussions on original methodology or application papers of biostatistics. Through the training, we expect the students to learn how to discover and define research questions, develop independent problem-solving skills, and advance scientific communication and academic writing skills as a biostatistician.
 
課程要求
 1. 論文選擇與上傳：
Paper selection and upload
(1) 由每一位修課學生針對特定主題，選取一篇原著生物統計方法或理論型論文於安排時間進行口頭報告。
Each student in the course has to choose an original methodology or application article in biostatistics for oral presentation.
(2) 所選論文必須於報告前4週寄給助教，方便助教上傳於NTU COOL上，以作為評論同學及修課同學聽取報告時之準備工作。
Presenters must send their selected papers to the course TA 4 weeks prior to the presentation (to be uploaded to NTUCOOL) such that other students can prepare their comments in advance.

2. 報告時間與方式：
Presentation time and format
(1) 修課學生皆需以英文進行口頭報告。每人報告之時間博士班同學約為30~40分鐘，碩士生為20分鐘左右，請斟酌投影片頁數。
Students are required to give the oral presentations in English. Presentations are limited to 30-40 minutes for doctoral students and 20 minutes for master's students. Please organize your slides accordingly.
(2) 在口頭報告最末必須提供1-2頁投影片，對整個報告進行總結。
At the end of the presentation, the presenter must summarize the paper in 1-2 slides.
(3) 請當週報告同學務必在當天報告早上9點之前（盡量提早），將要報告的ppt上傳到NTU COOL的作業區。
Presenters must upload their presentation slides to NTUCOOL no later than 9 am on the day of the class.

3. 評論與討論：
Comments and discussions
(1) 每次報告之後，有20~40分鐘討論時間，中英文不限。由3-4位事先指定的同學擔任評論員進行評論，報告同學則針對評論意見進行回應。
A 20-40 minute discussion will follow each presentation. 3-4 students will be assigned as commentators to give a review and ask questions on the presentation (in either English or Chinese). Presenters must respond in detail based on their understanding of the method or principles of the paper. Other students are encouraged to join the discussion.
(2) 授課教師們會對報告提出問題或提供整體建議。
At the end of the Q&A session, instructors will provide comments, suggestions, and overall evaluation of the presentation.

4. 作業繳交
Weekly assignments
(1) 除了每週指定評論的同學之外，每位同學每週需撰寫簡單Comment（中英文皆可），並於當天17:30前上傳至NTU COOL的作業區。
Students who are not assigned to present or comment should write a brief review of the presentations (in either English or Chinese) and upload it to NTUCOOL before 5:30 pm on the same day of the class.
(2) 報告人不需要撰寫自己的Comment，但仍須撰寫同週其他報告同學的Comment。
Presenters do not have to submit their own review but are still required to write a comment on other students' presentations.
